DDD play for CHSWOn Saturday 25th May 2019, the Dashing Devon Dukes supported the Harberton May Fair. At 14.00pm they played outside the Church of St Andrews, to entertain the people who were enjoying the many and varied stalls which were basking in the glorious sunshine, displaying local craft items, and offering refreshments.
This open air acoustic location in the Church Graveyard was not the easiest of situations in which to perform, due to the sloping, uneven nature of the ground. However, it was good to be elevated above the footpath where the stalls were set up, and, except for a light breeze, the weather was perfect.
The Band consisted of largely local players from the village, including six year old twins Emily and Elliot, but also a member from Beesands, who made the journey to be re-united with her old friends and play the gig.
As well as the familiar favourites, such as ‘Here come the Farmers men’, and Oh Suzannah, new material was tried for the first time, such as Green Grow the Rushes Oh, The Skye Boat Song and Greensleeves.
The audience lingered and enjoyed hearing the strummed ukuleles and guitars and the sound of young voices singing songs from a wide range of genres, including Jungle Book themes and certain pop tunes from past years.
Organisers very kindly provided the Band with iced lollies after their performance, which were very welcome, and perfect refreshment for the youngsters, some of whom had made the journey by bicycle, carrying their instruments on their backs.
